Program overview:

This activity will address the issues at the center of the debate of appropriate treatment for hyperphosphatemia and present important clinical results of recent trials that provide further insight for the management of patients with CKD.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should:

  • Recognize the prevalence and mortality associated with stage 4 CKD
  • Recognize the important role of phosphate binders in the continuum of care of patients with CKD
  • Recognize the findings from recent clinical studies to optimally control serum phosphorus in these patients
  • Recognize the multifactorial pathogenesis of cardiovascular calcification (CVC) in patients with CKD
  • Identify those at greater risk for developing CVC to implement appropriate interventions

Method of Participation:

This activity is an on-demand presentation available in two formats. Participants can choose between a CD-Rom and a virtual Web cast, which can be accessed online at www.kidney.org/CME. Participants must view the self-directed audio/visual slide presentation and upon conclusion of the activity, complete a post-test and activity evaluation to receive a certificate of completion. The estimated time for completion is 2.0 hours.

Overview:
Webcast participants will hear about published guidelines for the management of patients with CKD, and acquire knowledge for implementing these guidelines in clinical practice. Afterwards, participants will have the means to change practice behavior regarding the early detection and aggressive primary and secondary prevention of disease progression in these patients.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review treatment guidelines (JNC-7, KDOQI) as they relate to treatment of CKD with hypertension and proteinuria
  • Review the relations between urine protein excretion, cardiovascular risk and CKD
  • Review the therapeutic approaches to hypertension and proteinuria in CKD
  • Develop a conceptual framework for stopping the progression of CKD and treatment goals for hypertension and proteinuria
